Planning a construction phase with dependencies

A practical walk-through of sequencing, constraints, and milestones.

Scenario

You are planning the interior finish phase for a small commercial build. The plan must reflect trade sequencing and a strict inspection milestone.

Key activities

  • Frame interior walls (5d)
  • Rough electrical (4d)
  • Rough plumbing (3d)
  • Inspection (milestone)
  • Drywall install (5d)
  • Prime & paint (4d)
  • Flooring (3d)
  • Final punch (2d)

Dependencies

Frame interior walls → Rough electrical (FS)

Frame interior walls → Rough plumbing (FS)

Rough electrical + Rough plumbing → Inspection (FS)

Inspection → Drywall install (FS)

Drywall install → Prime & paint (FS)

Prime & paint → Flooring (FS)

Flooring → Final punch (FS)

Constraints and calendar

The inspection can only happen Tuesdays and Thursdays. Apply a calendar to the inspection milestone or set an SNET that reflects the next available inspection window.

Why this works

Every dependency is explicit, and the inspection constraint is visible. If drywall slips, the chain shows exactly why the final punch date moves. The schedule remains explainable.
